Nov. 8 test review questions 9-14 Flashcards
Why do earthquakes occur?
because the tect. plates smash against eachother
where do earthquakes occur?
the occur near subduction zones. (Edge of tect. plates) (Fault lines)
what are the results of earthquakes?
they cause mass destruction to property, and humans
What is a Richter scale?
It measures the size of earthquakes
how does the Richter scale work?
It works by them being listed a rating out of 10! The numbers are logarithmic, so 5 would be 10x stronger than a 4
Where do most volcanoes occur?
close to subduction zones
Why do volcanoes occur near subduction zones?
they occur because when the plate that is subducting reaches far below the other plate, the subduction plate’s rock melts. This creates gasses which reach the surface through cracks and reach the Earth surface often explosively.
what are the three types of volcanoes?
composite, shield, and cinder cone
Composite: Describe composition and shape. draw an example. Give an example
Large, cone shaped, made from lava, cinders and ash Ex. Mnt Fuji, Japan
Shield Volcano, Describe composition and shape, draw an example, give an example
Large width, small height, made of Lava. Ex. Mauna Loa, Hawaii
Cinder cone volcano, Describe composition and shape, draw an example, give an example
Similar, but smaller than composite. made of cinder and ash. ex. Paracutin, Mexico
Describe weathering
Weathering is caused when weather wears away at the surface of a rock breaking it into smaller rocks
Theres mechanical and chemical mechanical is like ice, or plants. Chemical is like acid rain.
Describe Erosion
Erosion moves the sediments by wind/water
Describe Deposition
Deposition is the settling of sediments in another place
1explain the following quote: “The Earths Physical landscape is the result of conflict between forces…” what are those forces?
The land is violently pushed upwards by a strong force, but is also being eroded down.
