Nov 2015 Flashcards
Name and describe the two types of plains
Coastal Plains – when a continental shelf is either uplifted by gradual forces or when the sea level lowers.
Alluvial plains - running water when a river slows down and deposits the suspended sediments along the river or at the mouth of the river.
Plains are nearly flat or gently rolling
Name the three major land forms
Mountains, plains and plateaus
Name in describe the two types of Plateaus
Uplifted plateaus – ancient uplifting seabeds
Lava flow Plateaus- flowing lava
A plateau is a table like surface area fairly flat or moderately rolling and bounded on at least one side of a steep slope
Name and describe the four types of mountains
Fold Mountains- earth’s plates crusts collide causing the surface rock to buckle into giant folds.
Fault Block Mountains - colliding plates build up pressure along parallel cracks
Intrusive Volcanic Mountains - molten magma doesn’t reach the earth’s surface
Extrusive Volcanic Mountains - molten magma reaches the earth’s surface
Mountains have moderate to steep slopes
Name the type of dwelling found in each of the following:
Warm flat plains (coastal): Cold flat plains: Higher elevation: Lower elevation (rural setting): High mountains: Coastal mountains:
Very large city Igloo Sun-dried clay bricks Farm buildings and many small towns Cabin Very large city
What does color show landforms on a map
Color shows the different elevations in an area
Is the earth’s crust one solid piece
There are six large ones and several smaller ones
What is the lithosphere
The earth’s crust and upper mantle
Name the three major types of faults
Normal – earth’s crust stretches
Reverse – earth’s crust is compressed
Strike slip – crustal plates slide past each other laterally
What causes earthquakes
When the strain gets too great and cracks appear along the earth. The sudden movement of the earth releases stored energy
