Partitive constructions defitnition (quantifiers and qualifiers)
Count and noncount nouns can both enter a construction denoting part of a whole. It may refer either to a)quantity or b)quality and the partition may be singular or plural.
It affords a means of imposing a number on noncount nouns since the partition is generally expressed by a count noun of partitive meaning which can be both singular, or plural, usually followed by an of-phrase
Quantity partition (quantifiers)
a) of uncountable nouns
a piece of cake - two pieces of cake
b) of plural countable nouns
a flock of sheep - two flocks of sheep
c) of singular countable nouns
a page of book - two pages of a book
Quality partition (qualifiers)
Mostly expressed with kind, sort (but also type, variety, blend
Count: “a new kind of computer” - “several new kinds of computers”
Noncount: “a delicious kind of bread” - “some delicious kinds of bread”
