Common Noun
The name of something you can see or touch - Eg, Dog, Hat or Apple
Proper Noun
Name of a person, place or thing - Eg, Matilda, Christchurch or Sydney Opera House
Collective Noun
A name given to a group of persons or things - Eg, Team, Herd or Litter
Abstract Noun
Something you feel - Eg, Hope, Sadness or Joy
Concrete Nouns
Something you can see or touch - Eg, Tree, hat or nose
Technical Noun
A specific area or topic - Eg, Galaxy, Oxygen and fraction
Terms-of-address Noun
When we are talking or writing to someone - Eg, Mrs Lawson, Your Honour and Sir
Count or countable Nouns
A noun that can be counted Eg, Dolphins, apples and pillows
Non-countable Nouns
A noun that cannot be counted - Eg, Fun, Homework and traffic
Verbal Nouns
A verb ending in ing that is used as a noun - Eg, Running, eating and dancing
Modal Nouns
A degree of possibility, certainty or obligation - Eg, Probability, necessity and chance
Compound Noun
A noun made of two words - Eg, Teabag, Snowman and bookshelf
Noun phrase
A noun phrase is a phrase that does the work of a noun - Eg, Eating apples, going fishing and playing tennis
Pronoun
Personal noun - Eg, She, I and her
Noun Clause
A noun clause does the work of a noun and contains a subject and a verb but does not make sense on its own - Eg, What I saw at the movies… was scary
Three types of pronouns
First person (I, me and mine) Second person (You, yours) and Third person (He, she and it)
