concrete noun
A thing that can be seen, heard, smelled, touched, or tasted

abstract noun
names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic
e.g. love, happiness, perfection
singular nouns
names one person, place, thing, or idea
plural nouns
names more than one person, place, thing, or idea
collective nouns
(nouns of multitude) name a group of persons, places, or objects gathered together into a unit.
e.g. council, delegation, orchestra, team, troop, herd
Why does plurality matter?
Plural subjects must have plural verbs. Singular subjects must have singular verbs
The girl runs home. vs. The girls run home.
The boy is nice. vs. The boys are nice.
compound noun
A noun made up of two or more words
three forms of compound noun
There are three forms of compound noun mechanics for writing. Use a dictionary to verify which form is correct.
- Separated: crab grass, player piano, space shuttle
- Hyphenated: jack-in-the-box, light-year, sister-in-law
- Combined: dragonfly, eardrum, earthquake
common noun
general name for a person, place, object, or idea
e.g. city, headmaster, play, class
proper noun
a SPECIFIC person, place, object, or idea
e.g. New York, Headmaster, Romeo and Juliet, Biologya SPECIFIC person, place, object, or idea
how to differentiate proper and common nouns?
Proper nouns get capitalized.
