type of clothing, manners, beliefs, social customs, governmental rules or laws, etiquette, repression , inequality, etc
Atmospher
the way a place or setting makes you (the reader) feel
Mood
the way a literary text makes you (the reader) feel
Tone
the way a writer / character speaks
Protagonist
main character in a story
Antagonist
character or force in opposition to or in conflict with the main character (not same as villain)
Foil
a character whose qualities are different from another character: by comparing a character to a foil, we learn more about the character we are examining
Static character
does not go through emotional change in the story
Dynamic character
goes through emotional or intellectual change in the story (sometimes this is just because they are revealed slowly by the author, but mostly it is because the experiences change them)
Flat character
a character who is not very well developed, especially because the reader doesn’t know much about their thoughts, feelings, or ambitions
Round character
a character who is well developed; the reader know about thoughts, feelings, ambitions, etc
Direct characterization
author describes character traits through narration or another character’s thoughts and words
Indirect characterization
author reveals character traits through that character’s thought, actions, and reactions
Exposition
background information
Inciting incident
events at the beginning that disturbs the life of a protagonist, sets that conflict and action into motion
Rising action
series of incidents that create suspense, interest, and tension in a narrative, leading up to the climax: including all decisions, thoughts, and actions
