Mass
The amount of matter
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Atom
Smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of an element
Element
A pure substance that has only on kind of atom (Note: These will be found on the periodic table of elements)
Compound
A substance made up of the atoms of two or more elements
Extensive Properties
Depends on the amount of matter present (Ex. mass)
Intensive Properties
Do NOT depend on the amount of matter (Ex. color)
Physical Property
A characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of a substance (Ex. height, mass, color, smell, etc.)
Physical Change
Melting, boiling, grinding, cutting. The substance is still the same substance, but has a changes physical appearance (Ex. water to ice, torn paper, mashed potatoes)
Liquid
Definite volume, no definite shape
Solid
Definite shape and volume
Gas
No definite shape and volume
Volume
The amount of 3D space something takes up
Molecule
At lease 2 of the SAME element put together (Ex. O2)
Compound
At least 2 DIFFERENT elements put together (ex. H2O)
