Notes 1-3 Flashcards
Chemistry
The study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter and the changes it undergoes.
6 Types of Chemistry
organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, biological, theoretical
Groups
Vertical (up and down) columns of the periodic table. Each group contains similar chemical properties
Periods
Horizontal (side to side) rows of elements in the periodic table. Physical and chemical properties change somewhat regularly across the period.
Lanthanide and actinide series
The two sets of elements placed below the periodic table.
Malleable
A substance’s ability to be hammered into sheets
Ductile
Can be made into fine wire
Tensile Strength
Ability to resist breaking while pulled
Metals
-Conduct heat and electricity
-Solid
-Malleable
-Ductile
-Tensile
-Shiny (grey or white luster)
Non-metals
-Poor conductors of heat and electricity
-Gas (mostly)
-Ex. nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, chlorine
-Brittle (easy to break)
Metalloids
-Stairstep on the periodic table
-Elements that have some characteristics of both metals and nonmetals
-Solid at room temperature
-less malleable than metals but not as brittle as nonmetals
-semiconductors of electricity
Noble gasses
-Group 18
-Un-reactive
-Low reactivity sets them apart from other families of elements
