Notes from dissection Flashcards
What arteries branch off the abdominal aorta?
-coeliac artery (T12)
-superior mesenteric artery (runs in front of the left renal vein) (L1)
-inferior mesenteric artery (L3)
The aorta then bifurcates into left and right iliac artery at L4/5/belly button.
What is the difference between the left/right testicular/ovarian veins?
Left drain into the left renal vein, whereas the right drains straight into the IVC
What is the anatomy b/w the testicular vein and artery?
They are easily separate superiorly, but appear as one inferiorly
Where is the ureter in reference to the testicular vessels?
Behind the testicular vessels
Why are the adrenal glands located near the IVC and aorta?
So the contents are released straight into the central circulatory system
What are accessory renal arteries?
Vestigial structures that form during the ascent of the kidneys from the pelvis tothe lumbar region
What’s the route of the testicular vessels after descent?
They travel through the inguinal canal with the vas deferens into the scrotum
What is the lowest rib?
12th rib
How long is the kidney?
10-11cm
What plane do the kidneys sit in?
Oblique plane
Why do you have to be careful when you remove the 12th rib in a patient?
- You could give your patient a pneumothorax as the diaphragm is attached so you can damage the pleura
- subcostal nerve (T12 spinal nerve) runs under the 12th rib obliquely to supply area of skin: if this is cut they get numbness in the T12 dermatome
How does the diaphragm divide the body anatomically?
Above the diaphragm is the thorax, below the diaphragm is the abdomen
How do you classify the different regions of the kidney?
Superior and inferior pole
What is the renal papilla?
Where the renal pyramids in the medulla empty urin into the minor calyx
