Q

Why do you have to be careful when you remove the 12th rib in a patient?

A
  • You could give your patient a pneumothorax as the diaphragm is attached so you can damage the pleura
  • subcostal nerve (T12 spinal nerve) runs under the 12th rib obliquely to supply area of skin: if this is cut they get numbness in the T12 dermatome
