Notes 9-11 (THURS) Flashcards
Basic types of interaction (give short description)
Using temperament example: passive (experince things diff with diff temp), evocative (evoke diff behaviors in others w diff temp), active (seek out diff env w diff temp)
What CAN’T you use heritability for?
can’t be applied to a single indiv, not an absolutely precise statistic, depends on the specific environment (ex - if in area with drought, heritability will drop)
Goal of selective breeding
create a behaviorally specialized strain of animals
Inclusive genetic fitness - gene that inc genetic fitness does 1 or more of the following things:
1) engables indiv to survive longer
2) enables indiv to reproduce more
3) inc survival and repro of biological relatives (who share some of indiv’s genes) - altruism is ex of this
2 types of selective breeding, and difference
single gene (impact shows up immed when you breed them), and polygenic char take longer
Hypothesized mating strategies in males
impregnate as many fit and fertile females (not old and unfit) as possible, be assured of passing on your genes
Hypothesized mating strat in females
be choosy, look for mate that’s fit and fertile and also willing to be able to protect/provide for offspring
(missed bullet here)
Evolutionary theory predicts
females will prefer males with high so…. (finish this later!!!)
Sex differences in jealousy - how do studies support this?
study showed men more upset about sexual infidelity, and women more upset about emotional (makes sense evolutionarily - if kid not yours bad for men, women want caretaker, know who father is)
3 cautions in interpreting evolution
evolution lacks foresight, no naturalistic fallacy (good/moral doesn’t mean better), no deterministic fallacy (resistance isn’t futile)
