Nose Flashcards
Describe the 6 features of the external nose
Root (superior) Dorsum (length) Apex (tip) Naris (nostrils) Nasal septum (divides nostrils) Ala (flares of nostrils)
What is the difference between the root, dorsum and apex of the external nose?
Root (most superior aspect)
Dorsum (length of external nose)
Apex (tip of nose)
What are the 3 cartilaginous segments making up the external nose?
2 x lateral cartilage (superior lateral)
2 x alar cartilage (inferior lateral)
1 x septal cartilage (midline)
Which 3 bones contribute to the external nose?
Frontal (nasal component & nasal spine)
Maxillae (frontal processes)
Nasal bones
Describe the anatomy of the nasal septum
- runs along midline of nose and divides nose into two cavities / naris
borders made up by:
- anterior: septal cartilage
- superior: ethmoid (perpendicular plate)
- inferior: vomer
- base: palatine and maxillae (nasal crests)
- vomer inferiorly
Describe the conchae and meatuses of the nasal cavity
Three conchae:
superior, middle & inferior
Three meatus (space between conchae): superior, middle, inferior
Which duct drains into the inferior meatus of the nose?
Lacrimal duct
Which structure connects to the inferior meatus of the nose?
The pharyngotympanic (Eustachian) tube, connecting the nose to the middle ear
Which are the paranasal sinuses?
Frontal (paired)
Sphenoid (paired)
Ethmoid (multiple)
Maxillary (paired)
Where do the paranasal sinuses drain?
The 4 paranasal sinuses drain into the superior and middle meatus of the nasal cavity
What are the components and borders of the nasal cavity?
Anterior opening:
- naris
Posterior opening:
- connection to nasopharynx (through chonae)
- connection to pharyngotympanic (Eustachian) tube connecting to middle ear
Vestibule:
- anterior component of cavity, lined with skin and hairs
Lateral wall:
Nasal conchae & meatuses
Midline: nasal septum
