Fascia of the Neck Flashcards
What are the fascial layers of the neck?
Superficial Investing Pretracheal Prevertebral Carotid
Briefly describe the location and major contents of each layer of fascia
Superficial
- encircles entire neck between subcutaneous tissue and deep fascia
- platysma
Investing
- encircles entire neck underneath superficial fascia
- SCM, traps, jugular arch
Pretracheal
- between hyoid and thorax, anterior to spine
- infrahyoids, thyroid, trachea & oesophagus
Prevertebral
- encircles vertebral column and surrounding deep muscles posterior to spine
- vertebral column & deep spinal muscles
Carotid
- two lateral sheaths running vertically from head to base of neck
- carotid arteries, internal jugular vein, vagus nerve
