  • Doomsday book says that Pevensey served as a market and for industry and salt making as the castle was built by the sea
  • 1066: 27 burgesses (rent was £1, tools were £3). In 1086, there were now 60 burgesses and the rent and tolls had gone up
  • Pevensey was built in the middle of a town

  • Since Pevensey was built on the south east coast, William could easily sail to and from Normandy only spent 1/4 of his reign in England
  • William has built 500 castles along the south and east coast so that they would all work together in defending the coasts
  • More landing points for Norman soldiers
