What did the doomsday book show?
It shows exactly who owned what in virtually every part of the county
Why was the doomsday book important ?
- since 1066 people had died or land had been sold and land disputes were common.
- took up four time and caused unrest
- allow William to charge for taxes easily
- know who owed military service
Why did William do this in 1085 ?
He through the vikings we’re going to attack and needed money to pay for the soldiers he bought over from Normandy

How was the doomsday survey gathered ?
- the country was divided into 7 circuits - existing info was collected
-> documents from the Anglo Saxons
-> each tenant-in-chief was required to send a
list of manors and men - the visits began
-> 3/4 commissioners were responsible for each
circuit - toured each circuit and asked questions about
land ownership
-> who held the land
-> how much land they held
-> how that it had changed since 1066
-> how much the land was worth in 1066 and
1085-86
Who did the Doomsday survey cover ?
- Pretty much the whole of England apart from some Northampton areas Because they weren’t fully controlled by the Normans, such as
- > Westmorland
- > Cumberland
- London and Winchester were not included
- > maybe bc they were exempt from certain taxes but also bc it was too complex a task

- came from the day of judgement
