How was the doomsday survey gathered ?

A
  • the country was divided into 7 circuits - existing info was collected
    -> documents from the Anglo Saxons
    -> each tenant-in-chief was required to send a
    list of manors and men
  • the visits began
    -> 3/4 commissioners were responsible for each
    circuit
  • toured each circuit and asked questions about
    land ownership
    -> who held the land
    -> how much land they held
    -> how that it had changed since 1066
    -> how much the land was worth in 1066 and
    1085-86

Who did the Doomsday survey cover ?

A
  • Pretty much the whole of England apart from some Northampton areas Because they weren’t fully controlled by the Normans, such as
    • > Westmorland
    • > Cumberland
  • London and Winchester were not included
    • > maybe bc they were exempt from certain taxes but also bc it was too complex a task
