What was William the Conquer intentions?
He intended to keep most the laws the same as he was a foreign invader and didn’t want to cause riots. Also he wanted to respect their customs as he wanted trust and respect.

Trial by ordeal continued, though they
added trial by combat.
Was the police force used?
The Normans had no real police force, so the
Anglo-Saxon system of tithings and the hue
and cry continued.
What law did William introduce?
William introduced the hated forest laws. The
punishment for killing a stag was blinding.
What new punishment did he introduce?
Mutilation, amputation and hanging were used for theft, arson and murder. This was carried out in public to act as a deterrent.
How did the church protect people?
The church did protect some people with sanctuary or benefit of clergy (by reading the neck verse).
