What is the murdrum fine
If a norman was killed and they cant find the murderer all the people of that region had to join together and pay an expensive murdrum fine. This was supposed to stop the increase in revenge murders that took place after Norman invasion and make it less likely that people would cover up the crime of a neighbour
Trail by combat
Normans added it
- used to settle disputs over large sums of money or land
- the two people would fight using swords or sometimes large sticks🎋(option for more wealthy people).
- the accused fought the accuser until one was killed or unable to carry on
- loser was then hanged as god had judged him guilty👹😇
What is church courts
The norman introduced church courts. These were separate courts used for churchmen and presided over by a local bishop. Church courts dealt with more moral crimes and never sentenced people to death.
