What is Murdrum?
A fine paid by the hundred were a norman body was found if the killer was not caught/punished
What did King William do to Rebels?
He ordered extreme punishments for rebels and punished those who weren’t involved by destroying farmlands
Why were so many Castles built?
To watch over the population and intimidate the public
Why was the Feudal System different to the Anglo Saxon Social System?
The freemen were replaced with knights, no one could move up or down and everyone owed money to the class above them
What were the Forest Laws?
Laws that let King William own all forest land through England and used to be communal land, making those who could afford it pay for hunting rights
What is Poaching?
Illegal hunting on land that belongs to someone else
What is an Outlaw?
A man (14 or over) that flees his shire to escape trial and punishment
What is the Female Equivalent of an Outlaw?
A waived woman
What did Norman Punishment continue to rely on?
Physical punishments, fines and executions
What changed from Anglo Saxon Punishment to Norman Punishment?
Wergild removed, fines paid to officials rather than victim’s families, increase in crimes punishable by death and mutilation and branding used more frequently
What changed from Anglo Saxon Crime to Norman Crime?
Poaching becomes a crime, social crimes introduced
What stayed the same from Anglo Saxon Crime to Norman Crime?
Murder, theft and property damage still are crimes
What are Social Crimes?
Actions against the law but people in society do not disapprove of
What New Ordeal was added to Trial by Ordeal?
Trial by combat
What was Trial by Combat?
Two men settling disputes over large amounts of money by fighting to the death with swords or sticks, if a man gave in he was put to death
