Key events of the Battle of Stamford Bridge

A

• William has not invited because of the wind
• HG heard about defeat at Fulford, and gathered troops to march north
• Hardrada has left all military resources at boats
• Harold Godwinson walks, 195 miles in five days – gathers and increases army as he marches through towns (15,000)
• Viking Beserka held back Anglo-Saxons from crossing the bridge, and killed 40 Anglo-Saxons
• Harold Godwinson’s Army was twice the size
• tried to convince Tolstig to swap sides, but was unsuccessful
• Hardrada’s shield wall broke, and he was struck in the throat by an arrow and killed
