When did the battle of Fulford take place?
20th September 1066
Key events of the battle of Fulford
• Hardrada invaded from the north (York)
• he was encouraged by Tostig
• Harold Godwinson is down south with troops, waiting for William – begin to run out of resources, HG disbanded troops
• Hardrada brought over 300 long boats, and army of 10,000 men – sailed from Norway
• left 3000 men to guard the boats up the river Ouze
• Morcar lead English - 4,500 men
• Hardrada was concealed by raised land
• Tostig and least experienced soldiers went around the back to break up shield wall of Saxons
• many were hurled into the Marsh as a bridge
• Hardrada is victorious - on the 24th York surrenders
• 150 hostages are given to Vikings
What weapons were used?
• double edge sword used for slashing
• 5 foot Dane axe – space needed and you couldn’t hold of shield at the same time
Who is Tostig?
• Godwinson’s brother – invites and encourages Hardrada
• he was unpopular in England due to high taxes
• Harold Godwinson had made Morcar the new Earl of Northumbria
• Harold Godwinson also married Morcars his sister
• Tostig wants revenge
