Normal Vision Changes with Aging Flashcards
Loss of accommodation
Can’t focus on close targets
Ciliary muscles lose tone; lens loses flexibility
Loss of low-contrast acuity
Loss of acuity under glare/low light; small targets easily missed
Decreased transmission of ocular media; decrease pupil size
Increased sensitivity to glare
Discomfort in low glare; decrease acuity in high glare
Increase light scatter in cornea, lens, vitreous humor, retina
Increase difficulty with dark adaptation
Hard to move from bright to dim environments; fall risk
Decrease ocular transmittance and papillary miosis
Loss of colour discrimination
Darks and pastels
Decrease pupil diameter; decrease light transmission in lens; change in photoreceptors
Loss of attentional visual field
Balance and mobility problems, motor vehicle accidents
Decrease in higher order visual processing
Increased difficulty with reading
Slow speed, text navigation decreases
Attentional visual field, low contrast acuity, slower saccadic performance
