normal structures Flashcards
What is Leukoedema?
variation of normal anatomy
found commonly in black and variably in white people
bilateral, diffuse white translucency on the buccal mucosa
Leukoedema cause
intracellular oedema of the prickle cell layer
frictional keratosis - cause
chronic mechanical, thermal or chemical trauma
e.g. sharp tooth or habit related
histopathological features of frictional keratosis
hyperkeratosis
regular epithelial maturation pattern
acanthosis - thickening of prickle cell layer
smoker’s palatal keratosis features
palatal mucosa appears white and crazed as a result of keratosis
red spots occur through blockage of minor salivary gland ducts
reversible if smoking habit stopped
not considered a potentially malignant disorder
smokers keratosis histology
keratin plugs in duct openings of minor salivary glands
fibroepithelial polyp features
typically a firm sessile or perdunculated polyp that arises from the labial and buccal mucosa
- result of mechanical trauma from teeth or dentures
fibroepithelial polyp management
can be easily excised under local anaesthesia
- will recur if source of trauma is not removed/corrected
denture irritation hyperplasia cause
often forms in relation to overextended flanges or alveolar bone resorption
