Q

0.9% sodium chloride (normal saline) neonates dose and route

A

The specific situation being treated will dictate the rate at which
normal saline will be administered. In severe heatstroke, diabetic
ketoacidosis, and freshwater drowning, it is likely that you will be
called on to administer the fluid quite rapidly. In other cases, it is
advisable to administer the fluid at a moderate rate (for example, 100
mL/h). Neonates: Fluid bolus: 10 mL/kg IV given over 5 to 10
minutes; multiple boluses may be administered if the patient remains
clinically hypovolemic. In a neonate, a 10-mL/kg normal saline bolus
may aid in improved perfusion and clearance of acid.
