what is normal pressure hydrocephalus?
reversible cause of dementia seen in elderly patients
what is the pathophysiology of normal pressure hydrocephalus?
thought to be secondary to reduced CSF absorption at the arachnoid villi
what are the possible causes of normal pressure hydrocephalus?
secondary to head injury, subarachnoid haemorrhage or meningitis
what are the classical features seen in normal pressure hydrocephalus?
- urinary incontinece
- dementia and bradyphrenia
- gait abnormality
what can be seen on images in normal pressure hydrocephalus?
hydrocephalus with ventriculomegaly in the absence of, or out of proportion to, sulcal enlargement
what is the management of normal pressure hydrocephalus?
ventriculoperitoneal shunting
what complications can occur following shunt placement?
- seizures
- infection
- intracerebral haemorrhage
