A
acute, unilateral, idiopathic, facial nerve paralysis

what is the peak incidence of bell’s palsy?
A
- 20-40 years
- more common in pregnant women

what are the features of bell’s palsy?
A
- lower motor neuron facial nerve palsy - forehead affected
- post-auricular pain
- altered taste
- dry eyes
- hyperacusis
in contrast - upper motor neuron lesions ‘spares’ the forehead

what is the management of bell’s palsy?
A
- oral prednisolone within 72 hours of onset
- prescription of artificial tears and eye lubricants

no improvement in bell’s palsy after 3 weeks?
A
urgent referral to ENT

how long does it typically take to make a full recovery in bell’s palsy?
A
3-4 months
