Normal Development V Flashcards
What is meant when we talk about Emancipated Identity
The belief that you are EMANCIPATED from your parents and significant others. You feel a sense of self-value even when your ideals and values differ from those close to you. Basically, you have enough self-esteem to be your own person. As you age, the child’s peer groups takes on a larger in facilitating emancipation than the parents.
What is the role of the parent in helping the adolescent form their emancipated identity
- They should be consistent in expressing their values and standards (don’t be a hypocrite)
- Parents should tolerate the teenagers independence but don’t criticize them when they express dependence (compassionate>asshole)
What are some rites of passage for 12-13 year old boys and girls
Boys: deodorant, athletic supporter, girls
Girls: deodorant, bra, boys
During adolescence, what happens in terms of sexual identity development
- Physical development during puberty stimulates closeness with the opposite sexed parent which freaks the kid out and causes avoidance
- The Oedipally related sexual fantasies need to be defended against until they are stopped. Done by getting a crush on a opposite sexed celeb or arguing with the parent a lot
- In heterosexual adolescences the bond with the same-sexed parent becomes stronger
- Teen wants to get mirror smile from parents as a sexually attractive person
- Parents need to keep sexual stimulation very low in the house and social life
