what are the principles of development?
- continuous process dependent on maturation of NS
- sequence of skill development should stay same between children but rate will vary
- motor development proceeds in cephalocaudal direction i.e. child masters head control, then trunkal control etc
- generalised mass activity changes to more specific movements
what are the 4 areas of development?
gross motor
fine motor and vision
language and hearing
social behaviour and play
what is the definition of developmental milestones?
key stage when new skill is developed
what is the definition of median age?
age when half population achieve a skill
what is the definition of limit age?
age when skill should have been acquired by most children
what are the primitive motor reflexes?
sucking and rooting
palmar and plantar grasp
moro
asymmetrical tonic neck reflex (ATNR)
why do primitive motor reflexes need to be lost?
to allow development of voluntary movement
what is sucking and rooting involved in?
breastfeeding
what are palmar and plantar grasp?
baby will grasp object placed in hand or foot
what is moro?
when babies head suddenly falls back, infant grasps with arms
what is ATNR?
if head turns to one side, limbs flex and extend on each side to stabilise baby
