what is congenital heart disease?
defect in the structure of the heart or great vessels that is present at birth
how does congenital heart disease clinically present?
can be no symptoms to life threatening
what are the symptoms of congenital heart disease?
tachypnoea
cyanosis
poor weight gain
feeling tired
can progress to heart failure
what is the most common rhythm disturbance in children?
supraventricular tachycardia (SVT)
what is the cause?
abnormally fast heart rhythm arising from improper electrical activity in upper part of heart
what are the 4 main types of SVTs?
atrial fibrillation
paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia
atrial flutter
Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome
what are the symptoms of SVTs?
palpitations
dyspnoea
chest pain
rapid breathing
dizziness
loss of conciousness
what is the HR usually during an episode of SVT?
150-270bpm
what is infective endocarditis?
bacterial infection of heart valves
what are the causative organsims?
strep viridans
staph
enteroccoci
how do most cases of paediatric IE present?
subacutely
low-grade fever
malaise
myalgias
arthralgias
headaches
new or changing heart murmur
