what are the structures of the lobules ?
each breast has 15-20 lobules
lobules drained each by lactiferous ducts which open independently on the nipple
each duct has a dilated lactiferous sinus

no fat or hair
contains collagenous dense connective tissue, elastic fibre, bands of smooth muscle
what is different about the male breast ?
small ducts without lobules or alveoli
little supporting fibroadipose tissue
how does the breast develop ?
mammary crests or ridges during 4th week
crests extend from axillary region to inguinal region
primary mammary buds - secondary buds - lactiferous ducts

polythelia
what is the blood supply to the breast ?
branches of axillary artery, internal thoracic, intercostal artery
what is the innervation of the breast ?
anterior and lateral cutaneous branches of 4-6 intercostal nerves
convery sensory fibres to skin
carry sympathetic fibres to vessels and smooth muscle round nipple
what are the chances of developing breast cancer ?
1 in 9 women
what are benign breast tumours ?
fibroadenomas
duct papillomas
adenomas
connective tissue tumours
what is Paget’s disease of the nipple ?
erosion of the nipple resembling eczema
associated with ductal or invasive carcinoma
