Nondisjunction (sex chromosomes) Flashcards
When can nondisjunction happen and why?
When homologous pairs fail to separate during anaphase I or sister chromatids fail to separate during anaphase II
Aneuploidy
Abnormal number of chromosomes
What can nondisjunction create is human gametes?
Gametes with 22 or 24 chromosomes, which is one more or one less than the normal amount
Monosomy
The zygote has a single chromosome in place of a homologous pair
Trisomy
Zygote will have three chromosomes in place of the normal pair
Turner Syndrome
Only one X chromosome , so the female has 45 chromosomes. Most monosomic disorders can be lethal, but there can be individuals with Turner Syndrome
Klinefelter Syndrome
Males carries XXY chromosomes, which makes them sterile and have a high amount of the female sex hormones
XYY Males
These males may be taller than average
XXX
Very rare and can’t be distinguished unless a karyotype is done.
