Non-Renewable Energy Flashcards
What are the 4 different non-renewable energy sources?
Coal, crude oil, natural gas, nuclear
Which of these are fossil fuels?
Coal, crude oil and natural gas.
What does non-renewable mean?
Are being used quicker than they can be replaced.
What does finite mean?
There is a limited amount so will run out.
Give two examples of nuclear fuels.
Uranium and plutonium
How is crude oil made?
Example:
There are fish in the sea and one has died. The fish will sink and land on the sea bed. The fish will then be buried in sand, rocks etc. The fish is compressed and heated by the earths core which causes (over time) the fish to change and form oil and gas.
We use an oil rig to drill down with a tube to suck up the oil.
Name 3 advantages of fossil fuels
Any 3 of the following
• we know how to use them as we have been using them for a long time.
• we already have infrastructure set up for using them
• we already have lots of fossil fuel power plants.
• reliable: we can use them at anytime of the day.
• very energy dense: a small amount makes lots of energy.
Name 3 disadvantages
Any 3 of the following:
• non-renewable: used quicker than they are being replaced.
• finite: will eventually run out.
• damaging the the environment: when burnt, carbon dioxide is released. Contributes to global warming and pollution.
• other harmful gases are released which contribute to acid rain which has big effects in ecosystems, animals etc.
• oil rigs aren’t pretty and they affect the habitats of marine life
• oil spills lead to oil going into the sea which has negative impacts on the marine life.
• coal mines aren’t safe for the humans and animals living around them.
How is electricity generated from fossil fuels?
