Energy Stores and Pathways Flashcards
What are the 8 energy stores?
Kinetic Thermal Gravitational potential Elastic potential Chemical Nuclear Electrostatic Magnetic
Kinetic store
Anything that is moving has energy in its kinetic energy store.
Faster objects have more energy in their kinetic store than slower objects
Thermal Store
Any object. The hotter the object is, the more energy it has in its thermal energy store.
Gravitational potential store
Anything that has mass and is inside a gravitational field. Objects that are on the higher shelf have more energy in their gravitational potential energy store than objects on a lower shelf
Elastic potential store
Any object being stretched or compressed.
The more the object is stretched/ squashed/ compressed, the more energy it has in its elastic potential store.
Chemical store
Anything that can release energy via a chemical reaction such as food, fuels and batteries.
Foods like bread have more energy in their chemical store than foods like lettuce.
Nuclear store
Atomic nuclei have energy in their nuclear store that can be released in nuclear reactions.
Electrostatic store
Anything with electric charge that is interacting with another electric charge.
Magnetic store
Anything magnetic that is interacting with another magnet. Eg north and south.
Electrical pathway
The transfers in an electrical circuit due to charges moving.
Mechanical pathway
A force causes an object to move so mechanical work is done on the object.
Radiation pathway
Energy is given out from a source such as as light or sound.
Heat pathway
Energy is transferred from a hotter object to a colder one
What is energy measured in?
Joules
