Non-renewable Flashcards
What are natural resources?
A natural resource is a resource that exists without the actions of humans. Natural resources may be categorised into 2 types: abiotic (non-living material e.g. fossil fuels, fresh water) and biotic (living and organic material e.g. animal and plants.
What is non-renewable energy?
Energy that will eventually run our one day, for example, fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are types of non-renewable energy. Fossil fuels - fuels that’s give us energy such as electricity that are naturally made over millions of years. Examples include: coal, oil and gas. When fossil fuels are burned they release greenhouse gases e.g. carbon dioxide which leads to global warming.
Advantages and disadvantages of coal.
ADVANTAGES
Coal is a reliable source of energy.
We can rely on it day and night, summer and winter, sunshine or rain, to provide fuel and electricity.
DISADVANTAGES
Using coal is also harmful
Mining is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.
Coal miners are exposed to toxic dust.
Advantages and disadvantages of oil.
ADVANTAGES
Quite cheap
Easy to make into fuel.
DISADVANTAGES
The world has a limited supply of oil.
When it runs out its gone.
Advantages and disadvantages of gas.
ADVANTAGES
We use natural gas for heating and cooking. We rely on natural gas to give power to central heating systems and kitchen appliances.
DISADVANTAGES
Expensive to extract
