Non Regenerative Flashcards
What nutrients are required to produce RBC
Carbohydrates, lipids and amino acids - all needed to produce cell membrane
Iron - essential for formation of haemoglobin
Vitamin B12 - needed for maturation of RBC
Folate - needed for DNA
What would be different in a blood smear from iron deficiency
Hypochromic = paler than normal due to lack of haemoglobin
Smaller than normal
What causes iron deficiency
Decrease iron in diet (rare)
Fast growing large breed pups
Suckling animals - mothers milk deficient in iron
Chronic blood loss
What is secondary non regenerative anaemia
When something is impacting on bone marrow preventing from producing RBC
What are 2 types of secondary non regenerative anaemia as
Inflammation
Renal disease
Why would renal disease stop bone marrow
EPO produced at kidneys - if kidney failure can’t produce there for can’t stimulate production
Or
Inflammation associated with chronic kidney failure
Why does inflammation stop bone marrow production
Inflammation inhibits the bodies ability to use stored iron - macrophages hold onto iron preventing haemoglobin production
Some cytokines produced in inflammation inhibit EPO
What is primary non regenerative anaemia
When there is a problem with the bone marrow itself
Types of primary non regenerative anaemia a
Aplastic anaemia
Pure red cell aplasia
Classic aplastic anaemia
What is aplastic anaemia
When cellular it’s of bone marrow is reduced
Damage or reduction of bone marrow cells
Can be more than one cell line
Caused by
Idiopathic
Chemicals
Radiation
What is pure red cell aplasia
Reduction in red cell precursor
Most often immune mediated
Infection
Vaccine related
EPO replacement therapy
Pancytopenia
Reduction in all red blood cell lines
Usually starts with cells of shortest lifespan
What is non regenerative
Failure of bone marrow to produce red blood cells
