non-random sampling 1.3 Flashcards
1
Q
what are the two types of random sampling
A
- quota sampling
- opportunity sampling
2
Q
How to carry out: quota sampling
A
- the population is divided into groups according to characteristics. A quota of items / people in each group is to try and reflect the group proportion in the whole population.
—> interviewer sets actual sampling units
3
Q
Advantages of quota sampling
A
- Allows a small sample to still be
representative of the population
*No sampling frame required - Quick, easy and inexpensive
*Allows for easy comparison between different groups within a population
4
Q
Disadvantages of quota sampling
A
*Non-random sampling can introduce bias
* Population must be divided into groups,
which can be costly or inaccurate
* Increasing scope of study increases number of groups, which adds time and expense
*Non-responses are not recorded as such
5
Q
How to carry out: Opportunity sampling
A
- Sample is taken from people who are available at time of study, who meet criteria
6
Q
Advantages of opportunity sampling
A
- Easy to carry out
- Inexpensive
7
Q
Disadvantages of opportunity sampling
A
*Unlikely to provide a representative sample
*Highly dependent on individual researcher
