What is the mechanism of action of antimuscarinics?

A

These medications block muscarinic acetylcholine receptors
→ This prevents the binding of acetylcholine
→ Reduce cholinergic activity in the CNS and periphery

  1. Dry mouth
  2. Blurred vision
  3. Constipation
  4. Urinary retention
  5. Cognitive impairment (especially in older adults)
  6. Worsening of tardive dyskinesia
  7. Potential for misuse (euphoria at high doses)
