non-ppt observation Flashcards
what is it?
Where researchers observe individuals/groups without getting involved
practical +
-can openly take notes
-easy to ‘blend in’
practical -
-Time consuming
-Potential to be overwhelmed with data
ethical +
-More ethical as most are conducted overtly
-Informed consent can be obtained
-Less likely to be harmed
ethical -
-some non-ppt obs can be covert e.g. watching cctv footage, informed consent can’t be gained
-stressful for ppts e.g. ofsted
theoretical +
-can see whats happening in society w own eyes
-less likely to feel sympathy + bias data
-High reliability
theoretical -
-Hawthorne effect likely when ppts know they’re being observed
-Validity reduced- can’t ask ppts why they’re behaving that way
-Researchers can pick + choose which parts of what they have observed is worthy- bias to fit hypothesis
examples in education
OFSTED inspections:
-good example for changing behaviour
