What are the non specific NSAIDS
diclofenac, ibuprofin, naproxen, ketoralac
What specific NSAID do we need to know? What is it mechanism of actions
celecoxib (Celebrex). Acts on on COX2 enzymes
What do prostaglandins do in the stomach? What happens when they are not being produced?
o Decrease secretion of H+
o Decrease secretion of pepsin
o Increase secretion of mucus
When not produced it can lead to GI bleed or peptic ulcer
What do prostaglandins do in the kidneys? What happens when they are not being produced?
o Increase excretion of Na+ and water
o Increase excretion of free water
When they are not being produced it can lead to oliguria.
What is an important fetal need for prostaglandins (It is why you can’t take ibuprofen of aspirin while pregnant)
The prostaglandins maintain the opening of the ductus arteriosus.
