Intro to Pharmacology Flashcards
What is a therapeutic Class
It tells you about condition(s) that the drug acts on. About tis clinical uses.
What is a phrmocologic class
It tells you about the mechanism of action of the drug
What is a trade name
The bran name of the drug such as Advil
Which type of drugs must meet USP standards?
Prescription and over the counter drugs
Which agency enforces the controlled substances act
The DEA
What is included in the pharmaceutical phase of taking a drug? What is the next phase?
Disintegration and Disolution?
It is followed by absorption. The first phase of pharmokinetics.
What are the three broad phases taking a drug?
Pharmoacological Phase, Pharmocokinetics, and pharmacodynamics.
What is pharmacodymaics?
The drug action on the bod
What are pharmacokinetics? What are the 4 steps?
What the body does to the drug. Absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion.
Which type of molucules easily cross the cell membrane.
not ionized, noon-polar, lipid soluable.
Which molecules have difficulty crossing the cell membrane?
ionized, charged, or polar molecules.
What factors affects the absorption of drugs?
Surface area, Route of administration, pH or absorptive site, Drug interactions.
What kind of drugs are absorbed in acidic environments? Why?
Acid Drugs. It will have a Hydrogen attached in an acid environment and it will not be ionized. It will be better absorbed in a non-ionized state.
Where are alkaline drugs best absorbed?
In basic/ alkaline environments.
What is an active metabolite?
A drug that is still active its from after it is metabolized.
What two factors and tow drugs we learned about so far lower CYP450 activity? What is the therapturic effect of this?
Ages extremes (neo-nates or older adults), Liver disease. Cimetidine, and erythromycin. Lower metabolism will increase the therapeutic effect, and cause increased side effects and possible toxic effects.
Which factors or drugs induces CYP450 enzymes?
Alcohol, charbroiled food, smoking (including marijuana, and St. John’s Wort.
What is the clinical importance of increased CYP450 activity.
Increased activity means drugs are metabolize more quickly and can result in lowered therapeutic effect.
