Non odontogenic cysts Flashcards
What are non-odontogenic cysts?
Developmental cysts formed from non-tooth forming tissue
Where is a nasopalatine duct cyst found and how does it present radiographically?
- Found in the nasopalatine canal near the incisive papilla.
- Features: well defined, round, ovoid and sometimes heart shaped radiolucency.
What is a globulomaxillary cyst and how does it present?
Between roots of maxillary permanent laterals and canines
Radiographically presents as an inverted pear shape.
What is a medial palatal cyst and what does it look like radiographically?
Most likely is a displaced nasopalatine cyst
Can occur in the mandible but is rare and probably of odontogenic origin
- Inverted pear shape
What are three examples of non-epithelialised cysts?
- Solitary bone cyst
- Aneurysmal bone cyst
- Stafne’s idiopathic bone cyst
How do solitary bone cysts present?
- asymptomatic
- rarely get expansion
- radiolucency follows roots of teeth
How does an aneurysmal bone cyst present?
- uni/multi locular
- irregular outline
“soap bubble appearance”
+/- displacement of roots
What are sublingual dermoid and dermoid cysts?
- Tissues found in the midline beneath the tongue
- from epidermal cell rests resulting from fusion of embryonic process
- deep, filled with keratin and slow growing
Where are brachial cleft cysts found?
FOM/posterior tongue
Often asymptomatic - lateral aspect of neck, anterior border of SCM
More common in children and young adults
Where does a thyroglossal cyst swell in the body?
Tongue to base of thyroid
What management is done on a thyroglossal cyst?
Thyroid scan +/- FNAC
What is an example of a mucus retention cyst?
Mucocele
Where are mucocele’s usually found?
Lower lip or FOM
If in upper lip (more sinister)
What is the tx for a mucocele?
Excision (comes with risks)
What is an example of a mucus extravasation cyst?
Ranula - swelling in floor of mouth
