non melanoma skin cancer Flashcards
what do you find keratinocytes
in the epidermis of the skin
what do langerhan cells do
Langerhans cells (LCs) reside in the epidermis as a dense network of immune system sentinels. These cells determine the appropriate adaptive immune response (inflammation or tolerance) by interpreting the microenvironmental context in which they encounter foreign substances
what do pickle cells do
Spinous cells, or prickle cells, are keratin producing epidermal cells owing their prickly appearance to their numerous intracellular connections. They make up the stratum spinosum (prickly layer) of the epidermis and provide a continuous net-like layer of protection for underlying tissue.
2 most common types of non-melanoma skin cancer are
Basel cell carcinoma -75%
squamous cell carcinoma -20%
others make up 5%
what are the risk factors for skin cancer
sun damage - UV radiation repeated sun burns Fitzpatrick skin type 1-2 - fair skin, blue eyes, blonde or ginger , hair albinism previous skin cancer elderly male actinic keratoses
actinic keratoses lead to what type of cancer
Actinic keratoses are very common, and many people have them. They are caused by ultraviolet (UV) damage to the skin. Some actinic keratoses can turn into squamous cell skin cancer. Because of this, the lesions are often called precancer.
BCC frequently occur on the upper back and can be slow growing flesh coloured nodules are destructive and removed via surgical excision
frequently occur on sun exposed sites - can be a sore that docent heal and form mets surgical excision
actinic keratosis
frequently occur together , common form of NMSC precancerous, can be small, scaly and patchy and developed into SCC - need topical therapies
which cancer does not really form mets
