Non-infectious disease - Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
Homeostasis is the maintenance by an organism of a relatively constant internal state (a state of balance), to allow them to function at their optimal metabolic efficiency regardless of external changes in the environment.
THE NEGATIVE FEEDBACK SYSTEM
The process by which this occurs is the stimulus-response pathway. A body system in which a response is intiiated to counteract a stimulus (anything that induces a response) and reutrn internal conditons to setpoint, maintaining hometostasis.
thermoregulation
The regulation of body temperature and ability to maintain an organism’s internal body temperature is coordinated by the nervous system.
Blood glucose
Glucose is essential for the production of ATP during cellular respiration. Maintenance of glucose levels are coordinated by the endocrine system.
Osmoregulation
Involves the maintenance of osmotic pressure (water and salt balance).
Hypothalamus
The hypothamlus (region in the lower central part of brain) is an important control centre in a negative feedback system.
behavioural, structural and physiological adaptations
BEHAVIOURAL - The way an organism acts.
PHYSIOLOGICAL - The way the organisms body functions
STRUCTURAL - The physical characteristics of the organism
