non human animals- BPS guidelines Flashcards
What must psychologists follow when conducting research with non human animals?
BPS guidelines
Give a few examples of these guidelines.
-Russel and Birch Replace, Reduce and refine meaning they should use other alternatives where possible to reduce the number of animals used and refine procedures so they cause less suffering.
-Be aware of an animals previous experience
-Pay attention to procedures that may cause pain
What’s some proof that guidelines are used?
The Animals (scientific procedures) act requires research with non human animals has to be carried out by licensed researchers who can gain access to a license if the knowledge gained justifies harm, the research cannot be done using non animal methods and any discomfort is kept to a minimum.
What is one strength of BPS guidelines and non human animals?
Safeguards provide protection, the ethical guidelines and Home office restrictions are effective and among the strongest in the world. The reduction in the use of non human animals in the last 15 years is evidence that safeguards are working.
What is two weaknesses?
-Its difficult to define what justifies using animals in potentially cruel conditions
-It is difficult to enforce the ethical guidelines, there may still be unethical research being carried out but not detected.
