What does the Peer influences explanation suggest?
People may develop addiction through praise and approval of people around them. eg. smokers tend to befriend smokers etc
What is the social learning theory and who’s idea was it?
Albert Bandura extended the behavioural approach and suggested that we learn through classical and operant conditioning and also observation and imitation.
What two key processes do individuals need to be motivated by?
- Observing someone who they admire
- Vicarious reinforcement, imitation must be seen as rewarding
How can the social learning theory be applied to addiction?
Someone might see their friends smoking and may see this person as a role model and see that they may have a higher social status because of the activities they’re engaging in because they seem to be enjoying it. Young people are most likely to imitate people who they have the most social contact with
What is meant by perceived social norms?
Rules and behaviours that are considered acceptable within a social group
What’s a descriptive norm?
An individuals perception of how much others engage in activities
Whats an injunctive norm?
What an individual perceives as others approval of the behaviour
