Text Structure
The way an author organizes his or her writing
Cause and Effect
The relationship between two things when one thing makes something else happen
Problem and Solution
A dilemma or problem is introduced and remedies (solution) are suggested.
ex. Humans pollute the earth - stricter laws on pollution & recycling
Compare and Contrast
A discussion of the similarities and differences between topics
Chronological
Listing, describing, discussing events as they happened (in order), in relation to time (time periods)
Sequential
Information is organized in steps or a process is explained in order in which it occurs
Description
A detailed explanation/description of a person, event, idea, ect. to give the reader a mental picture
Fiction
A piece of literature that is made up or not true.
Non-Fiction
Writing that is based on facts real events, people, places, ect.
Text Features
Visual or informational aids that enhance an overall text.
Help readers to remember BIG IDEAS and further support information from the text
They stand out from the rest of the passage and visually enhance it.
Print Features
Help the reader to pay attention to important words or pharases (Basically font)
ex. Bolded, Italicized, large print, color choices
Organizational Aids
Help the reader find information and connect ideas
ex. table of contents, index, titles, sub-headings
Informational Aids
Provide more information and helps the reader better understand the information discussed
ex. glossaries, charts, graphs
Sometimes overlaps with graphic/visual aids
Graphic/Visual Aids
Helps the reader visualize or paint pictured in their mind.
ex. pictures, maps, graphics, and illustrations
Sometimes overlaps with informational aids
Author’s Purpose
The reason an author writes a text - their intent
Primary Purpose
The main reason and author writes their text
Secondary Purpose
A minor reason an author writes their text
3 Major Purposes
Inform, persuade, and entertain
Annotating
Taking notes about ones reading in order to better understand/comprehend a text and think critically
Look for and Label

Central Idea
The main point that the author is trying to convey
AKA: main idea
Context
Words, phrases, sentences that surround the unknown word
