Non Ferrous Metals Flashcards
Learn
What is the “ALLOYING”?
Alloys are two metals melted together to improve a characteristic.
What is a Non-Ferrous Metal
A Non-Ferrous metal is any metal not containing iron
How is aluminium used in transportation
Aluminium can be use in Car and aircraft bodies, engine parts, Railcarts, and marine vessels.
How is Copper used in tranportation
Copper is used in Wiring in vehicles, Radiators and heat exchangers, and brake systems
How is magnisium used in transportation
Magnesium is used in High-speed train components, aircraft parts (seats, interior panels, gear components), and electric vehicle components.
How is titanium used in Transportation
Titanium is used in the Aerospace industry (public air travel), high-performance train components, and corrosion-resistant marine transport parts.
How is nickel used in transportation
Nickel is used in Jet engines and turbines, exhaust systems in buses and trains, stainless steel alloys for railcars and subway trains.
How is zinc use in Transportation
Zinc is used in Galvanized steel structures (train tracks, bus frames), and die-cast parts in public transport vehicles.
how is copper use in the railway industry
- Overhead Contact Wires
- Traction Motors & Transformers
- Busbars & Power Distribution
- Signaling & Communication
Why Copper? – Excellent conductivity + mechanical strength = essential for railway efficiency.
What is the difference between Ferrous and Non-Ferrrous Properties.
Non-Ferrous metals are corrosion resistance, and are often lightweight and non-magnetic. Ferrous metals are strong and durable but aren’t corrosion resistant.
How is alluminium used in car parts?
Aluminium is used in wheels to make it lighter,** Engine blocks, Transmition housing, Suspention(control arms and brackets) and battering housing,** this matierial allows the car to be lighter and better fuel economy.
Name some Alloys
Stainless Steel, Copper, Aluminium
what are the differernt copper alloys?
Common copper alloys include brass (copper and zinc), bronze (copper and tin),nickel silver (copper, nickel, and zinc), and copper-nickel alloys, each with varying properties and applications
what copper alloys are used in the railway industry?
copper-magnesium, copper-cadmium, copper-tin (bronze), copper-nickel, and copper-chromium, used for applications like contact wires, bearings.
What is “ANNEALING”?
