Module 5 - Concrete Flashcards
What make up concrete?
Concrete is a mix between cement, aggregates, and water
what makes up cement?
It is produced from a mixture of limestone and clay that’s charred and then ground up.
What makes up Aggregate?
gravel, crushed stone, and sand.
What are the properties of Concrete?
- workability
- strength
- durability
- creep
- shrinkage
- Unit weight
- Modular ratio
- poisson’s ratio
Types of reinforcing?
- Steel (Rebar, wire, mesh, cables)
- Glass (GRC-glass fibers are added to the concrete mix)
- Fibers (Synthetic, carbon, plastic)
What is workability?
refers to the ease with which the concrete can be mixed, transported, and placed into its final position.
What is strength?
strength and can withstand heavy loads and stresses.
What is durability?
highly durable and can withstand exposure to elements, including water, wind, and extreme temperatures
What is creep?
refers to the gradual deformation of concrete under sustained loads over time.
What is shrinkage?
Concrete can shrink as it dries, which can result in cracking and other damage.
What is unit weight?
The unit weight of concrete refers to its density.
What is modular ratio?
refers to the relationship between the elastic moduli of concrete and the** steel reinforcement** used to reinforce concrete.
What is poisson’s ratio?
a measure of the ratio of lateral strain to axial strain when a material is stretched or compressed.
what are the uses of concrete?
Driveways, patios, sidewalks, Car parks, streets, foundation/ footings, mid/high rise buildings.
