Non Ferrous Alloys Flashcards
What are non ferrous alloys
Metallic materials not based on Fe but contain Fe as an alloying element
Features of aluminium (4)
Much lower density than iron and copper
High electrical and thermal conductivity
Resistance to corrosion
Inexpensive compared to copper, magnesium and titanium
Mechanical properties of aluminium
FCC structure
Very soft and ductile due to structure
Fairly low melting point
How can the mechanical strength of aluminium be enhanced
Through cold working and by alloying
Both processes decrease corrosion resistance
Solution hardening - adding alloys to aluminium
Precipitation hardening
What effect does ppt hardening have on aluminium
The ppts work as barriers for dislocations in aluminium making it much stronger
Features of magnesium
Lowest density among all structural metals
Light weight
Relatively soft But due to HCP structure it is hard to deform at room temp
Relatively low melting temperature
Low strength
How can magnesium be made stronger
Alloying, heat treatment and cold working
Features of titanium alloys
Relatively low density but high melting point
HCP structure at low temps and BCC at above 882.5 degrees
High strength but not as ductile as Al or Cu
What is the main limitation of titanium
Chemical reactivity with other materials at high temps
Applications of titanium
Airframe skins
Applications of magnesium
Car seat frames
Casing for cellular phones
What r Refractory metals
Tungsten
Niobium
Molybdenum
High melting points
