Non-diaphyseal fracture repair and Growth Deformity Flashcards

1
Q

Why is it particularly important to consider blood supply in a juvenile fracture?

A

Blood vessels do not cross the physis but the metaphysis and epiphysis have separate supplies.

Q

Why is compressive fixation especially important in a joint fracture?

A

It prevents callus formation which would not be very beneficial in a joint. It also prevents ingress of synovial fluid which is detrimental to fracture healing.

Q

What is an avulsion fracture and what needs to be considered with this type of fracture?

A

A fracture f a site of major muscle attachement. Consider the pulling of the muscle on the fragment. Wires can be used to oppose this force and create a resultant, compressive force at the fracture site.

Q

How can an injury or osteochondral condition result in a deformity?

A

Growth at part of the physis may be halted/interrupted resulting in a change in the angle of bone growth. The priority with treatment is pain management.
