non cognitivism Flashcards
Non cognitivism
There are no objective moral properties or truths-moral statements are subjective emotional expressions about the world-anti realist-
Fact Value distinction
Suggests we cant derive values or oughts from facts because values are subjective and facts are objective
Hume-Emotivism
Suggests that moral judgements arent derived from reason but from emotion-we call actions wrong when they provoke negative emotions- these responses are subjective and refer only to our perceptions nothing in reality
Ayer-Emotivism
Ethical language is emotive because it cannot be emperically verified thus lacks meaning and cant tell us about the existence of anything in reality just about our own subjective feelings
Hume-emotivism examples
-We call actions like ingratitude wrong only because of the emotional responses it provokes in us-we attach it to the fact of an action but it is a subjective response-
-If morality was objective it would apply to the whole animal kingdom not just humans
