Cognitvism Flashcards
Cognitivism
The belief moral judgements can be true or false as a moral reality independently and objectively exists in reality, good and bad refer to things in existence actions can factually conform to
Moral realism
Cognitivist belief certain moral actions can be factually right or wrong
are moral judgements objective or subjective
Objective
Moral facts
Exist objectively and independently and we can discover them through reason-our actions can conform to them
Good and Bad
objective properties which actually exist we can know the meaning of
Values are facts
Values or feelings about if something is wrong can be factually correct, e.g if the good is pleasure and bad is pain, saying murder is wrong bc it causes pain is a value but objectively true
Ethical naturalism
The belief good and bad are natural, objective properties which exist and we can discover the meaning of them through reason or observation
Mills Naturalism
-Its a natural fact that pleasure is good and pain is bad as pleasure/happiness is strived for and is good for society and we intrinsically feel actions that cause harm are bad
Criticisms-Naturalistic Fallacy
-Gm moore-we cannot put natural properties onto a non natural property like goodness as its a fallacy-goodness isnt a natural property we can describe but we can know it through reason
Mackie-error theory
-Its an error to assume an objective good or bad exists at all, evidence suggests morality is subjective and no moral truths exist.
